Fortune-Telling Thauma-pops (front)

Fortune-Telling Thauma-pops (back)
Fortune-Telling Thauma-pops, Linocut stamps and oil-based ink on watercolor paper, acrylic paint, foam board, crepe paper, and bamboo cake pop sticksThese "Thauma-pops" are inspired by thaumatropes which are a simple paper toy that were particularly popular in the 19th century. On the night of the opening, I gave many of these Thauma-pops away to visitors. I wrapped them in black crepe paper to conceal their designs so that they may be surprise "fortunes".Starting from left to right:
The Lovers: Love, partnerships, harmony
Four-leaf Clovers: Good luck, abundance, happiness
Lover’s Eye: Sadness, secrets, loss
Death’s Head: Change, transformation, new beginnings
I placed a vintage brass bell on the Séance Table so that visitors could ring it to call me over to the Séance Room. I held this séance as a performance on the opening night of the exhibit.

Poetry
reinCarnationBeautiful but brief
Petals get swooped up by wind
Insects eat the leavesSeeds then get swept up
Floral reincarnation
Petals stretch like handsFrom sandy soil
Like zombie’s, wave from the grave
Hello then goodbye
Botanique ÉrotiqueSucculent Opuntia pads
ripe pears soft, fleshy, blushing, and ready
yet covered in spines.Remind me of Nepenthes
emerald cups that smell of nectar so sweet
with drowning honey inside. What also comes to mind is Dionea
with lips puckered up that almost whisper a welcome
but then shut tightly on to lovers arrived. But none dance quite like Datura
with frilly skirt hiked up and apples spiked
and seeds that give dreams and take lives.
Orb-WeaverIt is a rainy night, the air is petrichor scent
I watch my porch neighbor, Orb-Weaver, as she crawls on her web.
Her web reminds me of a fine lace or a dreamcatcher
and yet to most she is the ultimate nightmare bringer.I admire her bright colors and impressive creative skill.
Her web a delicate doily, bedecked with her kills.
Her web like a mourning lady’s veil with tears in its seams
or maybe more like a rosary with dew drops for prayer beads. If she allowed me a question, I would have to ask.
Why all that work for such a beautiful trap?
Carcasses will build up, leaving you little space to lurk
and one day some fool will stumble through and ruin your handiwork. And they will swat you away as if it’s your fault
you may even die as you and your web falls.
If you live, you’ll have to work away again and create a new embroidery.
If only I could see what your eight eyes see.Orb-Weaver is a true artist who should no longer be shunned
her work deserves recognition and to be gallery hung!
She could become a household name or even one of the greats
as long as the fly swatters are kept far away.
SpiritsWhen I light my candles, they dance within the yellow flames.
When I chant my incantations, they whisper back my name.
They’re in our homes and out in nature, they flow with water and fly with wind.
They may be seen and spoken with when the veil twixt our worlds is thinned.
Samhain approaches swiftly, I gather ritual items on my altar to prepare.
Black mirror, gem skull, and offerings are set up, lavender and mint scent float through the air.
I’m rather early for the Sabbat, I think of my ancestors as I drift off to sleep.
I’m sad to dream of mundane things, shopping trips, school anxiety, no messages that are deep,
but I am awoken by the strangest sensation, three soft taps on my pillow in front of my face.
I assume it’s my imagination, flip over to my other side, enjoying my blanket’s embrace,
but the three taps on my pillow come again, harder this time and behind my head.
I open my eyes, toss the blanket off me, and quickly jump out of my bed.
Who knew a witch could get so spooked? For Halloween, we witches are always in a hurry.
It looks like the spirits were excited, too, and decided to come visit early!
